TV Top 30, Day 1: Take My Love, Take My Land, Take Me Where I Cannot Stand

L-R: Jayne, Kaylee, Shepherd Book, Simon, Inara, Mal, Zoe, Wash, and River

Day 01 – A show that should have never been cancelled

There are far too many shows that could possibly be named here!  There are several shows that I love that I’m sad are ended, but after what the producers and writers did to the shows, they had it coming.  There are some shows that were excellent and then because of poor choices on behalf of the production team, killed them by having a bad finale to one season and then doing something totally different in the next, thus causing them to lose their fanbase along with their ratings.  Those kinds of shows got what they had coming when they got the ax, leaving distraught fans to write fanfiction to finish up and end the show properly (or keep it going and continue to have EPIC adventures)!  And then there are other shows…those that were truly EPIC and had far too short a lifespan.  This is the one I will write about today.

Firefly is quite possibly one of the most EPIC television shows I’ve ever watched.  It was really in many ways, almost too big for TV.  With an hour and a half EPIC pilot, along with 9 main characters that are more than just stock characters, the show simply rocked.  All of them…Mal, Zoe, Wash, Kaylee, Inara, Simon, River, Shepherd Book, and even the hilariously bad Jayne were each fascinating and could really stand on their own.  I’ve not watched too many things Joss Whedon has done aside from Firefly, but after watching that and the follow up movie, Serenity, I have to say that I have great respect for him for his ability to do so much with the little time he had on the show.  The acting was spot on, the stories were incredible, and even for TV, the effects were great!  I need to try to get my hands on Whedon’s two follow up graphic novels, Serenity:Vol. 1 & 2.  I’d be very interested in what Whedon has to say about his characters between Firefly and Serenity and after Serenity.

My favorite character on the show is definitely Kaylee.  I love how bubbly and cheerful she is and that she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty with hard work.  Her sweet personality is one I’d like to emulate.  I’d like to be able to walk into a room and just light it up with my smile.  I really like the other girls on the show, too, Zoe, River, and Inara.  I appreciate Zoe’s ability to kick butt and take names, as well as being a person who is a good and honorable soldier.  She’s solid and faithful.  I admire that in a person.  River is a very fascinating character and is truly very tragic.  There could’ve been so much more done with her tale.  Inara is intriguing to me for her ability to be so knowledgeable in the ways of people.  She knows how to be appropriate in nearly every situation and is flawless in her social interactions.   That is something I am not as good at myself, I’m afraid.  Honestly, I really just like all the characters…I need to find some good fanfic to fill the gap on character development for me.  Any recommendations here are greatly appreciated.  🙂

Anyway, enough TV meme for the day.  I’d love some feedback on these. Tell me your thoughts on this show or try the meme for yourself!

Blessings,

  1. Firefly is an amazing show that I’m sorry that I discovered only after it had been cancelled. I also like Kaylee’s character; that actress, Jewell Taite, was also in the last two seasons of Stargate: Atlantis, and I remembered her from an old Nickelodeon show, Space Cases, that lasted two seasons (I…err….had a short TV crush on her for a month or two back then, despite her character being a bit of a jerk).

    • No way, she was on Space Cases?! I loved that show when I was a kid, lol, I don’t remember who she was though. She’s as cute as she can be and seems like a really sweet person off camera, too.

Preach. Man, Firefly was fantastic. Even the Serenity film wasn’t as good as the TV show (I much preferred the ghetto four-wheeler Mule to the computer animated monstrosity in the movie).
